Take a look at the site at www.marniturkel.com SCHEDULE OF UPCOMING MEETINGS February 9, 2009 March 9, 2008 April 13, 2009 May 11, 2009 June 8, 2009 Northwest Flower & Garden Show Volunteers Needed We are again putting in an orchid-filled "garden" at the NW Flower & Garden Show this year and volunteers (and plants!) are needed. The show is February 18th through the 22nd at the Convention Center in downtown Seattle. Sign-up sheets will be available at the January and February meetings. The name of our garden is "Jungle Orchids, Jungle Masks" and will feature orchids along with intricately carved and painted Borucan Indian masks from Costa Rica. The masks and "live" master carvers are courtesy of Lauren Jawer of Mariposa Imports (Friday Harbor WA); surf over to her website http://www.mariposaimports.com to learn more. To make this display a success, we need orchids! More specifically, your orchids! We also need lots of foliage plants, large and small. We hope to create a jungle-like environment to dramatically set off the orchid flowers and masks. In addition to our garden, we will also have a membership/culture information booth in the Orchid Vendor Sales area. As of this writing, there will be at least 7 orchid vendors at the show this year -- Andy’s Orchids (CA), Out On A Limb (WA), Orchidaceae (WA), Emerald City Orchids (WA), Orquidea Wholesalers (CA), Palmer Orchids (TX), and Menifee Orchids (CA). That caught your eye too, eh? I thought you might be interested. Did I mention that volunteering a shift gets you into the Show for free? So what are the volunteer opportunities? Garden Setup - We need people on Sunday the 15th (noon to 5pm) to help form the garden structure by moving milk crates, lumber, and sawdust around. The larger foliage plants will be installed at this time. This is a great way to see how the Show is constructed. Plant Setup - This occurs on Monday the 16th (noon until we finish) and consists of installing your orchids into the display. The plan is to put 6" to 2 gal plastic pots into the sawdust hills and then put the orchids into these. This will hide the orchid pots while protecting our plants from the sawdust. Someone with good hand printing skills to write visible plant name tags would be a plus. Garden Greeter - This job runs in 3 hour shifts from Wednesday the 18th through Sunday the 22nd. You won’t be alone as there will be at least 2 (hopefully 3) people at all times to help greet the public, answer questions (or point to someone who might know the answer), help guard the plants, and provide periodic breaks with those in the member booth. Booth Greeter - This job also runs in 3 hour shifts from Wednesday through Sunday. You will staff our Membership booth in the Orchid Vendor Sales area. Our booth this year is a corner booth (two sides face the public) and is in the main traffic pattern between the Sales area and the Cafeteria. Teardown - This takes place on Sunday the 22nd at Show close (6pm until 8pm) and consists of dismantling the display, organizing the member orchids, and helping transport them to member vehicles. Sign-up sheets are available at the meetings or you can send me an email (vrugdish@gmail.com) or leave me a phone message (# is in the Roster).
