7:00 p.m.
University of Washington
Center for Urban Horticulture
3501 NE 41st Street
Seattle, WA 98105

Paphs and Phrags

Bert Logsdon of Logsdon's Orchids, who is also an AOS Judge, will talk to us about orchid culture with an emphisis on Paphs and Phrags. I've always enjoyed speaking to him when seeing him at shows and am looking forward to his talk on one of my favorite subjects.

Beginner's program (starts at 6:30 p.m.): Two topics: (1) What would you like to hear discussed at future beginner's programs and (2) I'll do my best to answer any questions you might have on growing orchids. Held in the front of the same room as our main meeting. And yes, I do plan to have some more structured beginner's programs soon.

Plant Table: Bring your blooming orchids to show!

Sales Table: Members may bring up to 10 plants to sell.

Raffle: Win a new orchid for your collection and support NWOS.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

First off, I would like to personally thank James McFarland for the wonderful donation of plants. I think that he will be please to know that all his plants were taken home by members of our society where I am sure they will be well taken care of.

Next I want to make everyone aware that there are some new procedures dealing with the NWFGS so make sure that you pay close attention to the instructions that Ms. Robin Kemph give in her article.

Now before you go and spend all your money at the NWFGS remember that less than a month later we will be having our annual spring sale and there will be vendors at it that wonıt be at the NWFGS. This year the sale will be at Sky Nursery on the 15th-16th of March.

Now is the time that we are looking for new members for the board. If you have any interest in becoming more involved contact Jerry Hoffmiester or Shannon Boling.

See you at the next meeting.

Jamie Notman
President

2003 NORTHWEST FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW

The Northwest Flower & Garden Show 2003 is underway, and all the details are in place. Our role this year will be similar to last year, with a membership booth and orchid hotel. We are also going to have the usual raffle for our scholarship fund. The things that will be different from last year are the sales area for our members and the display.

There are still some volunteer spaces left. You will have one more opportunity to sign up at the February meeting, as the show is the following week. This is a rare treat for us. Usually the NWF&GS is before the February meeting. Plenty of food slots are left, so please sign up to help out.

Entry to the show will be different this year. If you are volunteering, you will need to have a color-coded wrist band to get into the convention center. There is a different color for each day of the show, so if you are volunteering for more than one day, you will have more than one wrist band. The bands will also let you ride the shuttle bus from the Northgate Park & Ride for free.

I will be mailing out the wrist bands to the participants as soon as I have them (and hopefully will have them before the next meeting, but no promises). Setup will be on Monday (Feb. 17) evening, and tear down will be at closing on Sunday (Feb. 23). If you have plants for the display, or for sale, please arrange with George Grantham, or bring them in on Wednesday morning. We will do everything we can to have it all organized and ready to receive plants.

If you are going to sell plants, we are requiring that you place a blooming plant in the display, or sign up for a volunteer position. There are many ways you can help out. The Orchid Hotel is a very simple job, and a good opportunity to see what Seattle people are buying. The membership booth is a great place to answer questions about the Society and offer advice to new orchid growers. The sales area will be a busy place, selling plants, books, culture sheets and NWOS items. The host position will walk around the Orchid Show and offer advice, or just see that the display is safe from curious fingers touching the delicate blooms. Every job is easy, and no one will be alone.

Show Committee Chair

SPRING ORCHID SHOWS & EVENTS

We are about to embark on a busy spring schedule of orchid events. This is an exciting time of year when many varieties of orchids are in bloom and we have ample opportunities to enjoy and display the fruits of our own labors and to view and purchase plants grown by others in orchid shows throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Our society will be providing displays for the following events:

  • NW Flower & Garden Show (Setup Feb. 17, Show Feb. 19-23)
  • Mt. Baker Orchid Society Show and Sale March 1-2
  • NWOS Spring Orchid Sale at Sky Nursery (will include a display)-March 15-16
  • Spokane Orchid Society Show and Sale* April 5-6
  • Oregon Orchid Society Show and Sale* April 26-27
  • South Central Washington Orchid Society Show and Sale* (Tri Cities area) May 24-25

    *AOS-judged show

As you know, our participation in the Northwest Flower and Garden Show will be expanded this year to include a display. Our display will be on either side of the entrance to the orchid sales area and will utilize natural elements such as moss, stone, wood and foliage plants to suggest orchids in their natural environment. We hope to include a wide variety of hybrids and species in our display to provide the some 80,000 visitors to the Flower and Garden Show with an appreciation for the great variability within the orchid family. Setup for the show will be Monday evening, Feb. 17th starting at 5:00 PM. Please bring your display plants directly to the Convention Center on Monday evening. You will be able to register your plants (help will be available if needed) and you may stay and help with the display if you wish. You can bring sale plants at that time, too.

Remember, if you are bringing plants to sell you must also enter plants in the display. If you are unable to bring your plants to the Convention Center Monday evening, please contact me to make special arrangements or pool your efforts with another member. Likewise, if you are unable to be at the Convention Center at the close of the show to fetch your plants, please make arrangements to have me or another member collect them.

The Mt. Baker Orchid Society Show and Sale follows close on the heels of the Flower and Garden show. I will be collecting plants for that show on Thursday, Feb. 27th at my house. If you would like to bring your plants directly to the show, or assist with the show in any way, please contact me. The show will be held at Skagit Valley Gardens just south of Mt. Vernon. Although this is not yet an AOS-judged show we feel it is very important that we participate in their shows. They have displayed with us in the Seattle Flower and Garden Show and we want to help them make their own show a success. We also hope to encourage them to participate in our shows in the future.

In addition to the shows listed above which will include a NWOS display, theare additional shows scheduled this spring (see calendar). They are all AOS-judged shows, and they all provide a worthwhile reason to plan a weekend outing to a nearby destination. The Canadian shows are particularly worthwhile and with the exchange rate in our favor any one of those shows would make an economical weekend away. It is unfortunate that CITES regulations make participation in these shows too difficult.

TACOMA AND OLYMPIA SOCIETY SHOW REPORT

Our participation in the Tacoma and Olympia Society show was a resounding success. It was held in the Windmill Gardens Nursery in Sumner on Jan. 18 and 19. Our display (shown above) had 59 plants and of those plants we garnered 46 show ribbons including 24 blue, 14 red and 8 white. Harry Mar entered seven plants and received five blues and two reds. Likewise, Bill Carley and Judy Macias both received ribbons on all the plants they entered.

This show has been very good to us in that our display has seen at least one AOS award in each of the last three years. This year Jerry Hoffmeister received an AM/AOS for a gorgeous Paph venustum album (see photo at top of page). Congratulations Jerry! We also won the following "best of show" awards: Judy Macias Best Cattleya Alliance Hybrid for Sc. Cosmos 'Laina,' Judy Macias Best Plant in Show for Stenorrhynchos speciosus and finally George and Cylvia Grantham won best Milt. Alliance for Miltassia Royal Robe 'Jerry's Pick' and Best Oncidium Alliance for Odcdm Golden Trident 'Golden Gate.' Our display won the Orchid Digest Award for Best Display in Show.

Many thanks to Abigail Chang and Caroline Mann, as well as those mentioned above, for providing plants for the display. Special thanks to Jerry Hoffmeister for helping set up and also to Jerry, Harry Mar and Judy Macias for helping break down the display.

George Grantham
