April Meeting April
13, 2008 Gene Crocker on 'Cattleya Species and Their Influence on Modern Hybrids' Gene Crocker is Vice President and General Manager of Carter & Holmes
Orchids, which was founded by Bill Carter and his cousin Owen Holmes in the mid-1940s. This orchid nursery on Mendenhall Road in the
small South Carolina town of Newberry is synonymous with the highly respected clonal names 'Newberry' and Mendenhall'. One of the
most famous hybrid cattleyas ever created is the intensely colored, dark burgundy wine Blc. Oconee 'Mendenhall' AM/AOS. Gene was a
hobby orchid grower before coming to Carter and Holmes more than 20 years ago, which gives him good insight into the needs and desires
of orchid hobbyists. Orchids will be judged Saturday morning. Please see the society’s web site www.nwos.org for orchid classes and registration information. You will save time if you complete a registration form before bringing your plants. Print out a hard copy and also transfer the information to a flash drive (bring both with you) for faster registration. We need volunteers on three days - On Friday evening to help register plants and to set up the society’s display, on Saturday morning as ribbon judges, and all day Saturday and Sunday to staff the sales and display areas and, of course, late Sunday afternoon to dismantle the display. There will be sign up sheets at the April meeting. If you can’t make the meeting, contact Jamie or Dennis Notman (houseofdevo@comcast.net) or me. On Saturday there will be a potluck lunch for volunteers and ribbon judges. The society will provide sandwiches and something to drink. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. Remember: Volunteers get into the show free. For others, admission is $5. We continue to seek ways to publicize the show. Can you post information on an electronic bulletin board? If so, you’ll find all the information you need elsewhere in this newsletter or email me for text you can forward: kandmmurray@verizon.net Run for an NWOS Office Nominations Needed for the Gary Baker Service Award The Gary Baker Service Award is granted annually to recognize a society member for outstanding service during the past year. Nominations are accepted from any member and the final choice is made at the May Board Meeting, which will be held on May 5. The award honors a member with exceptional over-all participation and contributions or who has made particularly outstanding contributions in a specific area. Please give your nominations by written note, by email or by telephone to George Grantham by May 1st. It is helpful if you include with your nomination a brief note indicating why you feel that individual is deserving. The roster contains a list of past recipients. The ideal time to make your nomination would be at the April meeting, or right now before you forget it! John was a Philosophy faculty member at the University of Washington and at the University of Puget Sound. Later he was the Director of Student Services in the Department of Economics at UW until his retirement in 2000. The oldest of five children of Jerry and Mary Burke of Paso Robles, California, John was bitten early by the fishing bug, loved social events, kids, sports, dogs, cats, music, books and long discussions on every topic imaginable. He was a mentor, tutor and adviser to his disabled younger brother, Robert, who died in 2006. He played soccer as an adult, and traveled to England, Ireland, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Mexico and to the Southern and Eastern U.S., enjoying various cultural experiences everywhere he went. He wrote prose and fiction, collected and grew orchids, kept detailed notes on the interests of his five grandchildren, Hudson, McLean, Crew (David and Kelsey’s kids) and Jack and Timmy (Tom and Lisa’s sons) and kept the children supplied with books. He was a favorite Uncle John for a whole tribe of nieces and nephews, as well as Onkel John to the family’s Bavarian relatives and friends. His former wife, Vivienne Burke, and his wife Deborah Prince, and siblings Mary Riggs, Teresa Burke and Michael Burke remember with affection and humor the booming voice and laugh, the wide-ranging interests, and the sheer delight in life's unexpected adventures which characterized John. John's Estate donated two Wardian Cases to the Society. We're going to have a silent auction to benefit the NWOS at our Annual Show and Sale in April. There are two models - a "Bimini" and a "Maui". Both of these are still sold by the Orchidarium company and seem to be complete and in great shape. John was using both. All of the lights, wires and plugs are included. Here are photos of each:
