ORCHID SHOWS PAST AND PRESENT

Spokane Show: The Spokane Show (Mar 31-Apr 1, 2007) was very nice as always. There were several vendors whom we don’t see in Seattle and attendance was very good. The show was so successful that I tried to “hire” Jim Pearce, show chairman, to come to Seattle and chair our show next year and even offered him double the usual salary, but he declined. Hopefully one of our own members will step up to the plate soon to lead our extraordinary show committee to victory in the next show season.

Our display included 57 plants from 11 different members. It was very gratifying to get such a good turnout. Our display covered three large round tables which allowed for a little less crowded display than usual and this improved the visibility of each plant. The Spokane display was rightfully judged best display in the show but I would say ours was a close second.

Our plants earned 30 show ribbons, including 13 blue, 14 red and 3 white. Mike and Abby excelled in the ribbon category, receiving 3 blues and 2 reds on the 5 plants they brought. We won special awards as follows: Barry Bridge garnered an AOS award, a Certificate of Horticultural Merit, for a lovely little Bulbophylum unk. species. When it is identified, the clonal name will be “Ingrid Bridge.” Cylvia and I won “Best Vanda Alliance” and “Best Plant in Show” for our large Renanthera imschootiana which stands 4 feet high and has literally hundreds of orange flowers. Shannon Boling won “Best Lycaste” for a huge Ida linguella with dozens of cream-colored flowers. Craig Williams landed “Best Paph” for Paph. xanthophyllum and “Best First Bloom Seedling” for a lovely Paph vietnamense and Mike and Abby garnered Best Plurotahllis Alliance for Mas. Whiskers. Finally, two plants were nominated for AOS awards, including a huge gorgeous Cat. iricolor bursting with flowers and Cylvia and my Dend. Hancockii. The Cattleya iricolor was graciously sent by a member of the Mt. Baker Society, Rick Oosterwick.

In addition to all those mentioned above, I would like to thank Caroline Mann, Kyong Hu, George Krasle and Dan Kerr for sending plants.

Portland Show, April 28-29: The Portland show this year promises to be bigger and better than ever. It is being held in the Doubletree Inn at the Lloyd Center in coordination with a large show for Pacific Northwest Vendors of various other products. Arrangements are being made for our display at the time of this writing.

South-Central Washington Show, May 5-6: This will be a judged show held at the Highlands Grange in Kennewick. At this time we do not have plans to send a display to this show. If wine country appeals to you, you may like to visit this show.

2nd Vice President
