May Meeting May 11, 2009 The Annual NWOS Orchid Auction Members may bring up to five plants to auction off (NWOS takes a 20% commission) and as many more as you wish to donate for the Society’s benefit. The orchid auction at the May meeting is a great opportunity to expand an orchid collection—sometimes at little cost. Members bring divisions and excess plants. You never know what special things will be available. To bid, register at the auction table and receive a “paddle” with your number. If you are the high bidder, you will be handed your plant immediately. Pay on your way out with cash, check, or credit card (Visa or MasterCard). This is the society’s sole event at which no sales tax is collected. You need not be a member to bid. Please complete both sides of the enclosed form and bring it with you to the meeting. We can now accept credit cards at the auction. This was truly a team effort that resulted in a highly enjoyable event. Special thanks go to Linda Petchnick, who provided the backdrop used for the NWOS display, and to Dennis and Jamie Notman, show co-chairs. Others who expended an extraordinary effort to make the show come together included George and Cylvia Grantham, who designed and put together the society’s beautiful display; Pat Gossler, who took two days off from work to program cash registers with new sales tax rates and to reconcile vendor sales and receipts; Peter Maunsell, who worked from set up on Friday through tear down on Sunday; Chris Peterson, who transported banners and supplies to and from storage, helped set up and tear down, arranged the Saturday lunch, and wrote checks to vendors; Mike Foster, for chairing ribbon judging and special trophy awards; and Abigail Chang, for plant data entry and creating judging lists; and Mike Pearson, for photographing the trophy awarded plants. Of course, the sale would not have been possible without the vendors, who had a beguiling variety of orchids for sale and also had beautiful displays. We also are grateful to the Woodland Park Zoo and the University of Washington’s Botany Greenhouse for their outstanding display and to the Mount Baker and Spokane Orchid Societies for their gorgeous displays. The Show Committee is always looking for ways to improve the society’s events so if you have suggestions, please let me know. We continue to seek ways to publicize the show. Can you post information on an electronic bulletin board? If so, you’ll find all the information you need elsewhere in this newsletter or email me for text you can forward: kandmmurray@verizon.net Upcoming NWOS Sales and Shows NWOS Displays at Orchid Shows Past and Future The Spokane Show was held March 28-29. As usual, it was an excellent show and well-attended. Our display included over 50 plants from 9 different members. We were assigned one round table for our display but had to add a second table to accommodate all our plants. Ours was the largest display except for the host society’s. We received 33 ribbons but only one special award due to the stiff competition. Shannon Boling’s Lycaste concentrum was awarded best Maxillaria group. There were a number of other outstanding plants in our display including Harry Mar’s Disa Foam ‘San Francisco’ FCC/AOS, a veritable show-stopper. Other members who sent plants were Mike Foster and Donna Pearce, Margaret Lundquist, Mike Cory, George Krasle, Caroline Mann and Au Minh and Jerry Hoffmeister. Thanks to everyone who allowed their plants to make the journey!
Our own NWOS Show featured an outstanding display of members plants. In case you missed the show, our display was backed by a stunning blow-up photograph of one of Linda Petchnicks outstanding paintings depicting the species Chondrorhyncha chestertonii. The blow-up was used at Linda’s recent exhibit at the University of Washington. We would like thank Linda very much for her generosity in loaning this magnificent picture as well as murals she has painted for the society used as backdrops for various displays. Additionally one of the two wardian cases (Orchidariums) from John Burke’s estate was included in the exhibit. We had an excellent turnout of plants from members and plenty of volunteer help in setting up and tearing down the display. Joff Morgan, Mike Foster and Donna Pearce were especially helpful in setting up and tearing down the display and many others assisted including Peter Maunsell, Mike Cory, Al Mysiewicz, Kathy McLean, Michael Corn, Cathy Tuttle, Peter and Sioeling Young, Erin Goeker, Dennis Notman. Thanks to everyone for helping make our display a success.
The Oregon Orchid Society Show is May 9-10 at the Doubletree Hotel, Lloyd Center in Portland. Caroline Mann will be taking a display down. She will gather plants at her house on Thursday evening, May 7 for the show. It is a large show with many vendors and provides a great excuse to visit our fair city to the south. If you happen to be going to the show on Sunday, perhaps you could assist Caroline with the teardown at 4 PM. This is the last show of the season which we will participate in. Thanks again to everyone who has loaned plants and help in other ways with displays. George Grantham (Phone 206-440-9266, email: geoergegrantham@hotmail.com) NWOS Board and Officer Candidates NWOS officers and trustees will be elected at the May meeting.
