Our June meeting will be packed with excitement with a special guest speaker from New York, Helen Hersh, the Gary Baker Service Award and…food!

June is traditionally a potluck to welcome the new board members and thank the ones who are retiring. Deli meats will be provided along with pop, water, coffee and all the plates and utensils. What should you bring? To make it fair, we’ve determined who should bring what based on last name. So, if you last name begins with:

TIME TO RENEW!

It's time to renew your membership this month. A renewal form should be included in this newsletter for you. This year, we have “personalized” the membrship forms to make it easier for you and to ensure that the information we have in our database is correct.

[Members who read the newsletter online will receive their form in the mail.]

We are also asking for some new information this year in an effort to better tailor our programs and organize volunteers. Please take a moment to answer the additional questions and make sure we have your contact information right.

Members who joined in February 2005 or later do not need to renew until next year. An “update” form is included for you to review and add to your membership information.

Renewal and update forms must be returned by August 15, 2005 if you want to be included in the 2005-06 NWOS roster. The roster will be distributed at the September meeting.

You can renew by mail or in person at the June, July or August meetings.

MOTHER'S DAY ORCHID SALE A SUCCESS

We would like to thank all of those who participated in making the sale a success. We made over $2,000 in profit. We especially would like to thank Mark Bamber for generously supplying all of the plants we sold. Now what the show committee needs is more people to help plan the fall show. It’s your club and it only can get better with your participation.

HOST A SPEAKER

As your new good fun times director, I mean first vice president, I am planning a year of great speakers. Several of them will be world-famous people at least in the orchid world. In order to have these great speakers though I will need your help, fellow members. What I am looking for are people who are wanting to have one or more of these individuals as overnight guests. You will need to pick them up at the airport take them to dinner (the NWOS will pay up to $35 of the cost), bring them to the meeting, put them up for the night, and help them make their flight in the morning.

This generous act of kindness saves the society a heap of dollars and gives you some one-on-one time with an orchid expert. The strength of a club is measured through the efforts of the individuals in the group.

If you have any interest in helping house a speaker either give me a call or see me at the next meeting. I am in need of someone in September to house Karen Muir. Her talk will be on breeding with Brachypetalums.

Tips for hosting speakers

Dr. Joseph Arditti, who travels extensively giving orchid lectures, offers these tips on hosting:

  • Do you have the room? Guests should not be expected to share a child’s room or sleep on the porch, even if it is screened in. The accommodations don’t have to be spotless, but fresh sheets on the bed and a simple vacuuming are always appreciated.
  • Understand differences. Guests may have special dietary needs. They may also not be interested in joining you on your latest diet. Try to accommodate everyone’s preferences at meal time. If you have pets, make sure your guest isn’t allergic or uncomfortable around them.
  • Avoid politics and religion. Two topics that can turn a pleasant conversation ugly fast and are better left alone until you know someone better.

2005-06 BOARD ELECTED

The slate of 2005-06 officers and trustees for the Northwest Orchid Society was approved by the members at the May meeting. They are:

Secretary Brian Anderson
Trustees

Cathy Tuttle

Jerry Hoffmeister, the current president of the Society, remains on the board as Past President. A huge thank you to all of those who stepping down from the board for their hard work and more thanks to the new volunteers stepping up.

SUMMER ORCHID TRAVEL

This year I am going to plan a trip to Olympic National Park in late July to look at native orchids. More details in later newsletters.

I have also always wanted to go down and see Clackamas Orchids, so I am thinking maybe we could go in a group to see David Morris’ orchid collection.

Other members have already expressed interest and we are going to rent a van. Maybe some other members would like to do the same or have a van and we could all ride together? I have talked to David about this prospect and he will try and arrange something with Theresa Hill so we might see her orchid collection, too. The vans will be rented at no expense to the club, all by individuals. This trip will be sometime in August.

If you are interested in coming along on either trip, please let me know.

Jamie Notman

FALL SHOW PHOTO, THEME CONTEST

The Fall Show Committee is already at work planning this year's show in November. They are looking for ideas for a theme for the show—please send ideas to Kathy Murray. Also, we know there are several member who take professional-quality photos of their orchids and we would love to feature one on this year’s show poster. If you have photo you think is poster-worthy, please let Brian Anderson know (nwos_news@nwos.org). If you use a film camera, color prints or slides are fine. If you use a digital camera, the file size must be at least 300 dpi at a size of 8" x 10". Photo submissions must be received by June 10 to be considered.

The next show committee will be on June 20 at 7 p.m. at the Northgate Mall Food Court (across from JC Penney). Anyone is welcome to attend and participate.

FREE HALIDE LIGHT

Jamie Notman has a 1000-watt halide light that he would like to give away to someone in the orchid society. It hasn’t been used. It was given to him by a friend who bought it and then never used it. Anyone who is interested should give Jamie a call and arrange a time to come over and get it. Jamie’s phone number is (206) 545-7343.

NOTES FROM THE SECRETARY

We know everyone can’t make it to every meeting, so in an effort to keep members better informed about what is happening in the Society, the secretary will provide a synopsis of the last general meeting and board meeting.

MAY GENERAL MEETING
(Held May 9, 2005) David Morris of Clackamas Orchis in Oregon enterained us with a great presentation on the many varieties of Dendrobiums. The 2005-06 board was elected unanimously. A new sign-in sheet drawing let Jennifer Mills have first pick at a well-stocked raffle table. Be sure to sign-in at the June meeting to have your chance to win!

MAY BOARD MEETING
(Held May 3, 2005) The Society received no applications for its research scholarship this year, so the board elected to roll the money over until next year. The Fall Show committee has mailed initial invitations to vendors and the show has been moved to the Rainier Room at Seattle Center at the request of the Center. The Board also voted, on the recommendation of the treasurer, to move its savings account into a short-term CD that will earn a higher rate of return.

Brian Anderson
Secretary

NEWSLETTER EDITOR NEEDED

The Northwest Orchid Society is seeking a member with an interest in writing and laying out the monthly newsletter. No real experience is necessary. Volunteers will need to have access to a computer and e-mail. The editor is also responsible for printing and distributing the newsletter. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Brian Anderson at nwos_news@nwos.org or (206) 818-4364.

MEETING SCHEDULE

In recent months, several members have commented on the rather haphazard schedule at meetings, particularly that meetings rarely start on time and seem to run rather long. The board has discussed this issue and agreed that meetings should adhere more closely to the schedule published in the roster. To help us on the way, here are some tips:

  • Doors open early. Although the meeting time is advertised as 7 p.m., the meeting room is open at 6:30 p.m. and members are welcome to come early to chat, ask questions and bring in display plants.
  • Official start. The meeting is officially called to order at 7:15 p.m. So if you show up a little after 7, you won’t miss anything.
  • Featured speaker. The guest speaker for the evening begins at 8 p.m. and usually lasts about 45 minutes.
  • Raffle. The raffle is always the last event of the evening. Drawing for prizes begins around 8:50 p.m.
