June 2006
JUNE MEETING June 12, 2006 Annual Potluck & Member Slide Show June is traditionally a potluck to welcome the new board members and thank the ones who are retiring. Deli meats will be provided along with pop, water, coffee and all the plates and utensils. What should you bring? To make it fair, we’ve determined who should bring what based on last name. So, if you last name begins with:
Bring a dish to share and send in digital photos of your orchids in advance so we can include them in a slide show. E-mail your photos to bca.home@comcast.net by Sunday, June 11. Beginner’s program: (starts at 6:30 p.m.) Display Table: Sales Table: Raffle: COMING UP: Speakers and topics are subject to change. Got a suggestion? E-mail Jamie Notman, VP for Programming MEETING NOTES MAY BOARD MEETING (Held May 2, 2006) The treasurer’s report shows the Society with a net loss of about $600 year-to-date and it was estimated the Soceity will end the fiscal year (June 30) with a loss of around $200. This was attributed largely to lower-than-expected revenue from NWOS sales, especially the Spring Sale. The original budget forecast was to break even. This led to some discussion on the purpose and timing of our shows. Michael Corn, our new 3rd VP for Marketing, discussed some ideas for attracting new members and improving the member experience, including reviving the idea of “judging” the plant table and giving awards. The Society did this up until about five years ago. The board also voted on awarding a scholarship and on the Gary Baker Service Award. Brian Anderson BOARD SLATE FOR 2006-07 APPROVED The slate of 2006-07 officers and trustees for the Northwest Orchid Society was approved by the membership at the meeting on May 8. President: Jay Perez Jerry Hoffmeister remains on the board as Past President. A huge thank you to Pat Gossler who is stepping down from the board for her hard work and thanks to the new volunteers stepping up. HOST NEEDED FOR JULY SPEAKER Our July speaker would prefer to stay with a member than in a hotel. If you are interested in learning more or opening your home to an orchid expert, please contact Jamie Notman. FROM THE FIRST VP First, I would like to thank everyone who helped in the Mother’s Day blooming orchid sale. Thanks to George Grantham and my friend Colleen Compton for helping with the set-up on Friday evening. Thanks to Brian Anderson, Leanna Fox, Cylvia and George Grantham, Jay Perez, Ingrid and Barry Bridge, and Michael Corn and Kathy Tuttle for helping on Saturday. I didn’t recieve as much help on Sunday but I could not have done it without the help of Kathy Murray and Pat and Dennis Gossler, thank you. Last, thanks to Chris Peterson for all of her help. I believe that more money was made at this event than at the fall show. Good work! At our June meeting we will be having our spring potluck and for entertainment I would like members to send Brian Anderson pictures of orchids that only you got to see in bloom and we will have a slide show of them. Mark your callendars now! for the August picnic. This year we have been invited to Out on A Limb Orchid on the 3rd Sunday of August. More details later. Jamie Notman NWOS GRANT AWARDED FOR GOODYERA STUDYOtto Gockman, a student at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, is the recipient of a $500 Northwest Orchid Society research grant. Otto requested funding so that he could study a large population of Goodyera oblongifolia in the Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve south of Olympia over two growing seasons—2006 and 2007. He will measure, mark, and tag about 1,000 Goodyera rosettes and later record flower number and fruit set. After his study is completed, he will present his findings to NWOS members. Otto’s proposal was evaluated by Greg Sliman, Bill Carley, and Kathy Murray. NWOS research grants are available to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in institutions certified by the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Proposals are judged for experimental and research quality and must have some direct relationship to orchids. Kathy Murray TIME TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP It's time to renew your membership this month. If you receive the newsletter by e-mail, a renewal form will be mailed to you shortly. This year, we have “personalized” the membership forms to make it easier for you and to ensure that the information we have in our database is correct. We are also asking for some new information this year in an effort to better tailor our programs and organize volunteers. Please take a moment to answer the additional questions and make sure we have your contact information right. Members who joined in February 2006 or later do not need to renew until next year. An “update” form will be sent for you to review and add to your membership information. Renewal and update forms must be returned by September 1, 2006 if you want to be included in the 2005-06 NWOS roster. The roster will be distributed at the September meeting. You can renew by mail or in person at the June, July or August meetings. SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE: BE AN ORCHID ADVISOR A list of “orchid advisors” is published in the directory each year. These are members who have a lot of experience with a particular species and are willing to share that experience with other members who have questions. We are currently seeking an advisor on Cymbidiums, but if you have another species you would like to volunteer for, just let us know. To volunteer to be an advisor or learn more, contact Jay Perez at 206-818-4363 or jay98116@comcast.net. ORCHID SITE OF THE MONTH We're bringing back a past feature for the online version of the newsletter. If you would like to share your favorite orchid web site, e-mail me. This month's site is: It includes forums, chats, book reviews and reader-contributed articles on orchids and orchid care. An interesting place to browse around whether you are relatively new to orchids or a major hobbyist. JUNE MEETING OF THE NWOS FALL SHOW COMMITTEE All NWOS members are invited to join the Fall Show Committee and help plan this year’s AOS-judged show and sale that will take place on November 4 and 5 in the Olympic Room at the Seattle Center. The next Show Committee meeting will be Monday, June 26, at 7 p.m. in the Issacson Board Room at the Center for Urban Horticulture. If you can’t make the June meeting but would like to be notified of future meetings, please let Kathy Murray know by e-mail or phone. The committee needs people to help design and construct the NWOS display, to help with publicity, to coordinate distribution of posters, and to help with assorted other jobs. This is a great opportunity to get to know society members and to have some fun while supporting the society. FAMED HERONSWOOD NURSERY CLOSES Heronswood Nursery in Kingston has closed. The nursery was popular among local gardeners and orchid lovers. You can read the Seattle Times story here: Paradise lost: Heronswood uprooted DISPLAY TABLE THANKS The NWOS would like to thank the following members for bringing in plants for the display table last month: (No display table last month) NEW MEMBERS Please welcome these new members to our Society: Graziella Gioscia, Seattle Make a resolution to get involved! The NWOS desperately needs a new newsletter editor—the old one is all worn out! No real experience is necessary. Basic writing/editing skills, desktop publishing or web experience will be helpful but are not required. This position requires a commitment of 8-10 hours per month. Volunteers will need to have their own computer and an e-mail account that they check regularly. The editor is also responsible for printing and distributing the newsletter. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Brian Anderson at nwos_news@nwos.org. For additional volunteer opportunities, click "Volunteer Opportunities" in the side menu on this page. |
