Dennis (my brother) and I waited at the Olympic Information Center in Port Angeles on July 23 for all of our hearty adventurers. By 1 p.m. we had gathered four more participants for our adventure, George and Cylvia Grantham and two members of the Tacoma Orchid Society. We ate our picnic lunch and off we went. Our first stop was at the site of the Epipacitis gigantea in an undisclosed location (so that they aren’t disturbed). There we saw several clumps of them in full bloom, most gathered at the base of a tree. Then we went to the Old River Road and there on either side of the road, one side being the ditch and the other being a thinned wood lot, were hundreds of orchid plants in bloom There were Goodyera oblongifolia and several species of Platanthera. We then went up on the Hurricane Ridge road and about three-quarters of the way up there is a pull off and a trail head. We found Platanthera dilatata blooming (photo on page 2) in the seepage of the creek and all along the road on the righthand side in the ditch. Those little guys are very fond of water. Not only are they beautiful but they smell good, too. When we got to the top we ran into Sally Williams and Eunice Hanke. We all went over to the Hurricane Ridge trail and within 15 yards of the parking lot we found orchids blooming in the meadows and right on the path. It was a gorgeous day we saw six different species and hundreds of each kind. To top off the day, George, Cylvia, Dennis and I went over to Bob Ellis’ house and he gave us four trays of miniature Cattleyas to put on the raffle table at upcoming meetings. Jamie Notman VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE NWOS FALL SHOW AND SALE Your help is needed to make the Northwest Orchid Society’s 2005 fall show a success. This year’s AOS-judged show and sale will be November 12 and 13 in the Rainier Room of the Seattle Center. Please sign up to work one or more shifts. We need help during set up (beginning about 4 p.m., Friday, November 11), and all day Saturday and Sunday. Sign-up sheets will be on hand at both the September and October meetings or you can e-mail or phone (425-257-0583) Kathy Murray to request specific shifts. We need people for lots of different tasks during the show—everything from cashiering and bagging plants to ribbon judging. Ribbon judging is an excellent way to learn about what constitutes good and great orchids. The judging teams meet early on Saturday morning. (Jamie Notman will have details.) Each team reviews groups of orchids and selects the best in each group for ribbons. Ribbon judging is a lot of fun and after your morning of work, your reward will be lunch at a local restaurant with the AOS judges. Host needed. One vendor has asked that we attempt to find a host (someone she can stay with on Friday and Saturday nights). If you have space, please let Kathy know. Publicity and Poster Display Help Needed. At the September meeting, we will have show posters available. Brian Anderson has designed the great 2005 orchid poster that features photos by NWOS members (photo on back page). Please take some to put up in your local garden stores and nurseries. At the October meeting we will have smaller handbills for display in your car and merchant windows. Do you listen to or watch garden shows on the radio or TV? If so, please let Kathy Murray know of these so that we can get information to the hosts of these shows. Kathy Murray ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY SUBMISSIONS INVITED FOR JURIED FALL SHOW The NWOS Show Committee has been busy finalizing details for the upcoming show, Nov. 12 and 13, in the Rainier Room of the Seattle Center. In addition to commercial vendors and displays, the event will have a juried art and photography show with amateur and professional divisions. Linda Petchnick will chair the show. Linda, an NWOS member for several years, is an internationally-known botanical illustrator who recently attended the Royal Horticultural Society show in England where she enjoyed the opportunity to meet Prince Charles. For an application form please contact Linda at 360-825-1869 or lindy@tx3.com.
