Northwest Orchid Society News
Kathy Murray, president

October Meeting. I hope you’ll attend the meeting on October 13 when our featured speaker will be NWOS Member Linda Petchnick, a much-honored botanical illustrator who has exhibited worldwide. She currently has a show at Suzzallo Library on the University of Washington campus.

Because of the interest in culture information presented at the September, most meetings this year will have a segment on orchid culture. In October Mike Foster will talk about winterizing paphs.

During the business segment, members will be asked to vote on two changes to the Society’s bylaws as presented at the September meeting. The first would eliminate the third vice-president position, which is vacant. This officer was charged with developing outreach program to promote Society activities. The job would not disappear—instead the Board proposes creating a membership/outreach committee. The second bylaws change would correct what appears to be an error: Article VIII: Amendment or Change of the Bylaws, Section 2. Amendment Procedures now states that the “Bylaws may be amended or repealed at any meeting of the Society at which a quorum (50 members shall be present).” The Board proposes changing the wording to “ … a quorum (50 percent of the membership) shall be present …”

New Directory. If you’ve paid your NWOS dues, you will receive the Society’s new directory at the October meeting. I can’t thank Brian Anderson enough for again producing this publication, which is a terrific resource. As in the past it lists NWOS officers, committee chairs, bylaws, and library holdings plus contact information for NWOS Members. This year’s directory will have new sections with a calendar of NWOS events, a list of places to see orchids in the Seattle area, information about other local orchid societies, and a list of NWOS member orchid vendors and how to reach them.

Fall Sale at Swanson’s Nursery. On November 8 and 9 the society will have its fall sale at Swanson’s Nursery in Ballard. Swanson’s generously allows us to use the beautiful north glasshouse at no charge. Our sale will be concurrent with Swanson’s Christmas Open House so there will be lots to shop for in addition to orchids. If you’re not familiar with Swanson’s, it is a beautiful nursery with lots of parking and even an on-site café.

We expect at least seven orchid vendors for the sale: Baby Dragon Orchids, Portland; Hatfield Orchids, Oxnard, California (specializing in cymbidiums); Orchidaceae, Walla Walla; Out On A Limb Orchids, Camano Island; Sorella Orchids, Vancouver, Washington; Olympic Orchids, Lynnwood; and Seattle Orchid.com. There will also be a member sales area and an orchid display. Please see the directory for information about how to mark your plants to ensure you are paid. The society will handle all cashiering and charge a 20 percent commission. The only other condition for selling is that you must bring at least one plant for the orchid display and if your time permits we hope you will also volunteer to work a shift.

We need volunteers for 3-hour shifts on Saturday, the 8th, from 9 to 5 and on Sunday, the 9th, from 9 to 4. There will be sign up sheets at the October meeting. Alternatively, email or phone me at 425-257-0583; kandmmurray@verizon.net.

Flower & Garden Show. Plans are well underway for the Society’s orchid display garden at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, February 18–22, at the Convention Center in downtown Seattle. We will need volunteers for two areas—our orchid display and a membership-information table in the orchid sales area. Volunteer to work a three-hour shift and get into the show free. We will also need people to help set up and take down the exhibit. For more information contact Joff Morgan (VRUGDISH@gmail.com) or George Grantham (georgegrantham@hotmail.com).

Annual Show & Sale. Because of parking problems and the high cost of putting on a show at the Seattle Center, this year the Society’s annual AOS-judged show will be April 18 and 19 in the main hall of the Center for Urban Horticulture (where we have our monthly meetings). Please consider joining the Show Committee and helping with this major undertaking.

Officer Changes. Members at the September meeting learned of a reshuffling of society officers. I volunteered to be president, Michael Cory agreed to take over as secretary, and Christina Fredette-Sankey volunteered to take Mike Cory’s trustee position. She also will head the membership/outreach committee. Some background: In May, John Burke was elected president for the 2008–2009 year. He injured his back in July and missed both the July and September Board meetings. Subsequently, there were many attempts to contact him but he has not responded to mail, email or phone calls.  We wish John the best and hope he’ll be able to return to the NWOS and perhaps serve as president next year.
