This Month: Ron Parsons on the subject of Masdavallias and Draculas

Ron Parsons is considered by many to be one of the finest flower photographers in the United States. His photography and encyclopedic knowledge of orchids is known both nationally and internationally. He has been photographing orchids, wildflowers, and almost every other kind of plant for over 25 years, and has a slide collection that numbers well over 80,000 slides!

Ron loves to travel, photograph orchids and wildflowers in situ, visit orchid and other plant enthusiasts collections, and most of all, to take photographs of plants and flowers that he likes.

Ron's photos have been featured in journal articles, book covers, and in several books.

Both genera are somewhat similar in appearance with prominent sepals that often have tails, but with reduced petals and lips. Masdevallias are considered the more varied, having more that 500 species, and come in many colors and patterns. Draculas, of which there are approximately 120 species, are largely somberly colored often with patterns reminiscent of animal faces.

Ron recently co-authored a book on Masdevallias, which features his photography as well.

Ron will also bring a variety of Orchid plants for sale.

NWOS Fall Show and Sale

Mark your calendars for the society's annual fall show - Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8. Once again Swanson’s Nursery is generously providing the society with the use of one of its large glasshouses for our sale and display. Hours will be 9 to 6 on Saturday and 9 to 4 on Sunday.

If you’d like to help with the sale, sign up at the October meeting or email or phone Kathy Murray: kandmmurray@verizon.net; 425-257-0583. We need volunteers to cashier and bag, answer questions, and repot orchids. George Grantham will also be asking for orchids for a nice big display of blooming orchids.

Do you have orchids you'd like to sell? As a member, you can sell plants and orchid-related items on the member sales table. Be sure to double tag all items (two price tags with your name so you are reimbursed). You must be a current member so please pay your dues if you haven't already done so. The society cashiers all sales and charges a 20 percent commission.

We will have a number of vendors offering a wide variety of orchids for sale. A complete list will be in the next newsletter. Come, shop, and support the NWOS. And tell all of your orchid-loving friends about this event too.

On September 16, Linda Petchnick won the "Best Painting in Show Award"; at the New York Horticulture Society and American Society of Botanical Artists Juried Art exhibition in Manhattan, New York. Chondrorhyncha chestertonii took the top prize. Linda had 2 of the 40 paintings on display.

Another of her paintings will be on exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum from October 15th through the end of January.
