Jim Hamilton: Easy-to-Grow Orchids

Jim Hamilton founded Petite Plaisance Orchids with Ron Ehlers in 1981. Petite Plaisance has a reputation for well-established plants beautifully grown in pots, teak baskets, or on hapu or cork mounts. Most of their offerings are mature, blooming-size plants. Two growing areas, cool and intermediate to warm, permit them to subspecialize within the realm of native plants, and their extensive collections of Bulbophyllums and Lepanthes are impressive. Jim is a past president of the San Francisco Orchid Society and on the Publications Committe of the Trustees of the American Orchid Society.

Can I still volunteer?
Yes. We still need volunteers, especially on Sunday. Most jobs require no special experience or expertise—anyone can help! Call or e-mail Kathy Murray at 425-257-0583 or kandmmurray@verizon.net.

Can anyone be a show judge?
Yes. Ribbon judging is an excellent way to learn about what constitutes good and great orchids and no experience is needed. Judges work from 8 a.m. - 12 noon on Saturday and get a free lunch. Contact Jamie Notman to be a judge at 206-545-7343.

Can I sell plants at the sale?
Yes. NWOS members can sell as many plants as they like at the NWOS table, if they volunteer to work one shift or bring a plant for the display. Every plant for sale must have a tag with your name and the price on it that is separate from the tag with the plant name on it.

Where do I park?
There is limited free street parking in the blocks around Seattle Center. There is also a pay garage on Mercer Street and pay lots near the Center. (See the map.)

How can I get my plants eligible for judging?
Plants must be part of the display to be judged. All display plants must be registered on Friday evening. You can bring your plants to the Rainer Room starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 11 and as late as 8 p.m. It is possible that plants brought in by 8 a.m. Saturday morning will be considered. If you would like to include plants in the display but can’t bring them Friday evening, contact George Grantham at 206-440-9266 and he may be able to find someone to pick them up from you.

DECEMBER HOLIDAY PARTY

The December meeting is our annual holiday party. We would like everyone to bring food that can be easily eaten in one or two bites. For instance if you want to bring a pie cut it up in to little pieces instead of slices, the more people can enjoy the pie and no one person will be expected to eat a large piece. Canapes, tea sandwiches, stuffed mushroom caps and cookies are all examples of such food. The society will provide a meat and cheese tray.

Our entertainment that evening will be a powerpoint presentation of pictures of orchids that members grew that they were the only one that got to enjoy and now are sharing with the group. We will also have the Shoenfeld trophy conpetition and something new, the Rebecca Northen minature orchid trophy. Anyone can enter plants in either competition with the limit of one plant per trophy. The Shoenfeld trophy is awared to the plant in bloom that wins the most votes by the general populace at the meeting that evening.

We are having the new award because in the past when someone entered a small plant with lots of flowers in the Shoenfeld trophy competition they would be overlooked because there would be some big cattleya or cymbidium entered. So the minature trophy will be awared to a plant in full bloom that is under 6 inches in height (the plant not the infloresence). As in the past all current members will recieve an orchid plant as a gift from the society.

So send in those pictures to the newsletter editor, Brian Anderson and I will be looking forward to seeing all of you at the meeting.

1st Vice President

2006 AOS CALENDARS FOR SALE

The 2006 AOS calendar, full of beautiful and unusual orchids is available from the NWOS. Members pay just $10 when they purchase it at the meeting. Regular price is $11.95.

ORCHIDS ONLY YOU SAW BLOOM:
Submit your photos for presentation

As part of our December meeting this year, we thought it would be fun to have a slide show with pictures of all those orchids that bloom in between meetings. You know that wonderful cattleya whose gorgeous flowers started to fade just before you could bring it in for the display table? Did you take a photo? Or maybe you have a favorite plant that you didn’t want to risk transporting?

Send us your photos (no more than five per member, please) and we’ll make them into a slide show. Digital files are preferred (JPEG) but we can also accept prints (sorry, no slides). All entries must be received by December 1 to be included. Be sure to include you name and the name of plant with your submission.
Digital photos can be sent to nwos_news@nwos.org. Prints can be given to Brian Anderson at the November meeting or mailed to his address in the directory.

NOTES FROM THE SECRETARY

We know everyone can’t make it to every meeting, so in an effort to keep members better informed about what is happening in the Society, the secretary will provide a synopsis of the last general meeting and board meeting.

OCTOBER GENERAL MEETING
(Held October 10, 2005) I was unable to attend, but several members reported that Kathy Creger gave a very interesting talk on her orchid hunting adventures in Jamaica and even showed a film from her “orchid cam” letting you feel what it’s like to climb trees searching for orchids in the wild.

NOVEMBER BOARD MEETING
(Held November 8, 2005) The November board meeting will be covered in the December newsletter.
