November Meeting This Month: Glen Decker on the Phrag kovachii odyssey and it's hybrids Glen Decker began growing orchids at the age of 15 and holds the degree of Associate in Applied Science in Ornamental Horticulture. Glen is presently the owner of Piping Rock Orchids in Galway, New York. He was the previous chair of the American Orchid Society's Publications Committee and is presently a Director of the Orchid Digest Corporation. Glen has won numerous AOS awards, including the Butterworth Prize, Nax Trophy, WW Wilson Award and the Carlyle A. Luer Award. He has appeared in Martha Stewart's Better Living Magazine and on a PBS TV special "Orchid Delirium". He rewrote the Slipper section of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's "The Best Orchids for Indoors" and was the technical editor for the "Orchids for Dummies" book. Glen is offering a 10% preorder discount on Orchid plants (this offer does not include the Phrag kovachii species plants) from his Piping Rock Greenhouse. Go to the web site at www.pipingrockorchids.com and you can contact him at pipingrock@aol.com Display Table: Sales Table: Raffle: NWOS Seeks Show Committee Chairperson Qualifications/requirements are not extensive and no prior show experience needed (new members encouraged!). The club will provide a list with a timeline and tasks at hand to be delegated to committee members. As show chair, you will delegate responsibilities and coordinate the event planning. This position is just for the Spring Sale planned at Sky Nursery, April 2010. Additionally, advice will be readily available from numerous other members as needed. Being a volunteer for the NWOS is a fantastic way to show support, meet others with the same interests, and learn more about orchids. For more information regarding this position, please contact the NWOS President, Abigail ChangNWOS Fall Show and Sale
There will be four commercial vendors plus a member sales area. The society was recently given a large collection of orchids, which will be at the sale. Some are specimen size. All need repotting. They will be very reasonably priced so come early. Participating vendors will include Out on a Limb Orchids (Camano Island), Olympic Orchids (Lynnwood), SeattleOrchid.com, and Piping Rock Orchids (Long Island, New York). Piping Rock specializes in paphiopedilums and phragmipediums and the owner, Glen Decker, will be the speaker at the meeting on Monday, Nov. 11. We still need help for the sale—especially on Saturday afternoon. If you can work a shift, please contact Kathy Murray by email or telephone: kandmmurray@verizon.net; 425-257-0583. We need volunteers to cashier and bag, answer questions, and repot orchids. Do you have orchids you’d like to sell? As a member, you can sell plants and orchid-related items on the member sales table. Be sure your plants have a removable tag with your name and the sales price so you are reimbursed correctly. You must be a current member. The society cashiers all sales and charges a 20 percent commission. Sale proceeds help fund our programs; dues cover only a tiny portion of the society’s annual budget—about enough to rent the CUH hall for the monthly meetings. NEXT MONTH: The holiday potluck party, plant giveaway and awards. Your 1st VP will be receiving a few Orchid Hats from Barbara Noe of Celebrate Orchids, for members who renew or start a new American Orchid Society membership. I will wear one to the meeting for all to see. To take advantage of this offer, contact Mike Foster at the meeting or on line fosterpierce@comcast.net.
