DECEMBER MEETING December
9 , 2002 Holiday Potluck Our December meeting is a special potluck. Bring your favorite finger food or dessert to share. We will also be awarding the Schoenfeld trophy for the best plant on the display table. Everyone will have a chance to vote for their favorite and the winner will take home this year's trophy. Please bring ONLY ONE plant (your best, of course) for the display table. There will be no speaker, no beginner's program and no plant sales table this month. A HAPPY HOLIDAY FOR NWOS MEMBERS Happy holidays! This year at our annual holiday party there are presents for everyoneevery member receives a free plant (plants have been donated to the Society). We're asking everyone to bring a finger food or dessert to share for our holiday potluck. Beverages and utensils will be provided by the society. We will also award the Schoenfeld Trophy for the best blooming plant. All you need to get the trophy is to bring in one blooming plant that you think will blow all the others away. Plants will be accepted for entry till 8 p.m. so clean up your best plant and bring it in. This year we will be adding a silent auction to the program. December is a great time to have an auction, with the holidays right there. We are looking for items that the society can auction. The donations must be 100% to the society, and be related to or actual orchids. Nice books about orchids, jewelry, art, orchid pottery, and real blooming plants are some ideas. Bring all of your donations to the December meeting. Robin Kemph and Jerry Hoffmeister will handle the items and ready them for the auction. The agenda for the meeting will include time for the silent auction, the Schoenfeld Tropy winner, and a fabulous feast of finger-foods. The December plants and the new rosters will be handed out to current members. (Membership forms will be available if you would like to join or need to renew on the spot.) FROM THE PRESIDENT Seasons greeting, fellow orchidists. I hope this yearıs growing has brought you as many blossoms as I am getting. I have ten plants in bloom in my living room and twice as many in spike in my greenhouse. Some of the coolest looking catts in my collection bloomed literally the day after the meeting. With any luck I will have several plants to chose from for my Schoenfeld entry. If any of you where fortunate enough to purchase one of the divisions of the Coelegyne cristatas that myself or Jay Perez divided at the Spring Sale, now is the time to quit watering it in order for it to bloom. It likes to be kept in a bright warm dry place until either it flowers or March arrives. Whichever comes first, start watering it then. I would like to give a special thank you to Tim Towner for all his efforts in the bookkeeping department and his bringing our books into the 21st century by getting the whole mess into the computer and on to QuickBooks. Thank you, Tim. Because of this the board has decided to purchase a computer and the QuickBooks program so that whoever the next treasurer is they will be able to use this resource. As you all know this meeting is our Christmas party and this year we are going to have a finger food-type party. We would like everyone to bring something that can be eaten with your hands, like cake, cookies, candy, canapes, crudites, hors d'oeuvre and the like. We will supply utensils and beverages. Every paid member will receive an orchid plant. This yearıs plants are once again out of own booty of donated plants I have been tending for the past year, and frankly will be glad to see them go to new homes. As I mentioned earlier this is Shoenfeld trophy time which is where each and every one of you is invited to bring the most blooming plant in your collection and display it for all to see. Then we will cast our votes for the plant we like the most and the winner take home the Schoenfeld trophy cup. In the last newsletter I mentioned that the board approved the purchase of a magnifying lens for the society so that if someone brings a plant with tiny flowers we can all see it. That purchase has been made and I will bring said magnifier to the next meeting and all meetings there after. Have you ever wanted to immortalize yourself by having an orchid named after you? If you have, well now there is a company that has a deal for you. I got this postcard in the mail and I am going to reprint what is on the back for your enjoyment. Many orchids have been named after people. As a breeder of orchids,we are delighted to offer you a rare opportunity to have an orchid named after you. Each month at www.Haleahi.com, we will present a photo of a part of an orchid. This orchid was pollinated on an exact day. If the day and month of your birthday matches the day and month of pollination, you qualify to win. At the end of the month, the winner will be randomly selected from all individuals who qualify. If you win, your name will be registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in England as the name of the orchid, and eventually it will be published in the Sanderıs Orchid Hybrids. Immortalized in the orchid world, your name will be the name of the orchid and all orchids with the same parent. If you live in the USA ( or territories), we will send you free of charge, the orchid with your namesake. How about that? I hope to see all of you at the next meeting. Jamie
Notman WEB SITE OF THE MONTH American Orchid Society This month I'm going to point your browsers toward the American Orchid Society's Website which they call the "Orchid Web." You will find several interesting areas to browse including: conservation and research, society information, and general orchid growing tips. One of the most useful areas is the Books and Publications section where you can order books, videos, and gift items online. While browsing through the vast array of book titles, write some down that you believe we should add to our library and bring your list to the librarian. The AOS offers numerous orchid related items perfect for holiday gifting! There is also a question and answer forum section where you can post your questions or even dare to answer someone else's query. Finally, don't forget to join the AOS. Your support keeps our national organization running and, in return, you'll receive the terrific monthly journal aptly titled, Orchids. Darrow Chan November

Orchids 2003 NORTHWEST FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW This year we will have a bigger presence at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show. We have been promised a large area to sell our own members' plants, and do our usual outreach to the orchid community. We are going to try to make a little more money this year, with sales of the calendars, books, orchid culture sheet packets, logo items and some of the plants left over after December's meeting that belong to the society. As always, we will also have a raffle to support the scholarship, and the orchid hotel for other funds. If you are planning to sell your own plants at the show, you will be required to add at least one blooming plant to the display, and volunteer for a shift at our booth. Many of you are familiar with volunteer positions at our show. It is a very easy and fun thing to do. You can show off your orchid knowledge, learn more about orchids, and have a chance to see the whole Flower & Garden show. We are still working out the details of our "benefits" at the convention center, such as parking or ticket entry. Please stay tuned. In exchange for a very large (and free) space at the show, we are putting in a display. George Grantham, and others, will be making plans soon, so please ready your plants for show. This will not be an AOS-judged show. I look forward to all of your help. Robin Kemph, Show Committee Chair "ORCHID THIEF" MOVIE OPENS DEC. 6 Adaptation, a new movie opening Dec. 6, is based on the nonfiction book The Orchid Thief by Susan Orleans. At least, it was meant to be. The movie has ended up being about the screnwriter's attempt to make a movie out of the popular book. An account of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's (Nicolas Cage) attempt to adapt Susan Orlean's (Meryl Streep) book The Orchid Thief, which is the story of John Laroche, a plant dealer who clones rare orchids then sells them to collectors. We see the action of the book as we see Kaufman struggle to adapt it into a movie. This is presumably a somewhat true story, as Charlie Kaufman is the real-life screenwriter of Adaptation. The movie was directed by Spike Jonze, best known for the critically-acclaimed and surreal Being John Malkovich. It sounds like he has made an equally odd movie this time out. HAWAII TRIP BEING PLANNED Some members of the Society are considering a trip to the Hilo Orchid Show in Hawai in late March. Hilo is a rustic small town nestled on the shores of Hilo Bay on the east coast of the "big island" of Hawai'i also known as "The Orchid Isle." The 51st Annual Show of the Hilo Orchid Society, "Orchids in Paradise," will be held in the Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium. This show is also hosting the American Orchid Society's Spring 2003 members and trustees meeting. Anyone who is interested in going, should contact Jamie Notman for more information. NEWSLETTER SUBMISSION WELCOME FROM EVERYONE As your newsletter editor has confessed before, he is more of an orchid observer than an orchid grower. Obtaining articles, without crossing into the shady territory of plagarism or copyright infringement, can be difficult. That's why I like to encourage all members, no matter what your level of expertise, to send something for inclusion in the newsletter. Visit an out-of-town orchid show recently? Tell us all about it! Found a neat little potting trick for cymbidiums? Our readers want to know! Finally got your first bloom on that Paph. rothschildianum? That's a major news story for us! Share your experiences (and photos if you have some) with everyone. Send your news to nwosnews@attbi.com. Don't have e-mail? Mail to the P.O. box address on the front of the newsletter. OTHER NEWS Got a suggestion for a speaker or program? The fall schedule is currently open and first vice president Jerry Hoffmeister is interested in knowing what you would like to hear about at upcoming meetings. E-mail at jerry@hoffmeisters.com or call him (206-932-9912) with your suggestions. 2003 AOS Calendar Discover the "Wow!" factor in the world of orchids with this glorious calendar that makes a great gift for friends--and for yourself. The calendar takes a look at 12 orchids whose special qualities seduce their admirers. Cultural hints for growing each plant picutured are provided. 12 color photographs. 11x22 when open. Price: $10 for NWOS members who purchase at the monthly meeting. Ridesharing Some of our members in the suburbs are unable to attend meetings because they don't drive. Taking the bus, especially in the evenings, can make for a very long trip; taxis are too expensive. If you live on the Eastside or in the North or South End and either would like a ride to meetings or would be willing to offer a ride to meetings, e-mail nwosnews@attbi.com or call and leave a message on the NWOS line at (206) 781-5805. We will try and match up drivers and passengers wherever possible. Orchid Pests and Diseases - 2002 Revised Edition.
