CELEBRATE ORCHIDS AT DECEMBER PARTY

The December meeting is our annual holiday party. We would like everyone to bring food that can be easily eaten in one or two bites. For instance if you want to bring a pie cut it up in to little pieces instead of slices, the more people can enjoy the pie and no one person will be expected to eat a large piece. Canapes, tea sandwiches, stuffed mushroom caps and cookies are all examples of such food. The society will provide a meat and cheese tray.

Our entertainment that evening will be a slide show of orchids that members grew that they were the only one that got to enjoy and now are sharing with the group. We will also have the Shoenfeld trophy conpetition and something new, the Rebecca Northen minature orchid trophy. Anyone can enter plants in either competition with the limit of one plant per trophy. The Shoenfeld trophy is awarded to the plant in bloom that wins the most votes by the general populace at the meeting that evening.

We are having the new award because in the past when someone entered a small plant with lots of flowers in the Shoenfeld trophy competition they would be overlooked because there would be some big cattleya or cymbidium entered. So the minature trophy will be awared to a plant in full bloom that is under six inches in height (the plant not the infloresence). As in the past, all current members will receive an orchid plant as a gift from the society.

HOST NEEDED FOR JANUARY SPEAKER

We need a host for Ron Parson, our speaker in January. He will need to be picked up at the airport on Monday, January 9, entertained (going to the UW greenhouse and looking at the plants), fed, brought to the meeting and put up for the night, fed the next day and taken back to the airport. Sound fun? It will be for one of our fine members. He can stay in a motel/hotel if need be, but we still need someone to take him around.

Ron is a world-class orchid photographer and has just returned from a five-week trip to Australia. He has been published in the AOS magazine and Orchid Digest. If you are interested, contact Jamie Notman as soon as possible.

THE FIRST SCENT OF SPRING IS IN THE AIR

The Northwest Flower & Garden Show is coming up February 8-12, 2006. The NWOS is hosting its usual Orchid Hotel and membership booth. George Grantham will also be creating a member display for the orchid area that will offer more variety than the usual Flower & Garden Show orchid display.

If you would like to sign up to work a shift at the show or help George with plants and setup, there will be sign-up sheets available at the December and January meetings. Wristbands for entry to the show will be distributed at the January meeting.

The display will be set up on Sunday, February 5 at 2 p.m.; the Hotel will be set up on Monday, February 6 at 11 a.m. For more information, contact Christine Peterson at (206) 525-2217.

2006 AOS CALENDARS FOR SALE

The 2006 AOS calendar, full of beautiful and unusual orchids is available from the NWOS. Members pay just $10 when they purchase it at the meeting. Regular price is $11.95. There are a few copies left which may be for sale at the December meeting.

ORCHIDS ONLY YOU SAW BLOOM:
Submit your photos for December presentation

As part of our December meeting this year, we thought it would be fun to have a slide show with pictures of all those orchids that bloom in between meetings. You know that wonderful Cattleya whose gorgeous flowers started to fade just before you could bring it in for the display table? Did you take a photo? Or maybe you have a favorite plant that you didn’t want to risk transporting?

Send us your photos (no more than five per member, please) and we’ll make them into a slide show. Digital files are preferred (JPEG) but we can also accept prints (sorry, no slides). All entries must be received by December 9 to be included. Be sure to include you name and the name of plant with your submission.

Digital photos can be sent to nwos_news@nwos.org. Prints can be mailed to Brian Anderson (his address is in the directory); prints will be returned.

NOTES FROM THE SECRETARY

We know everyone can’t make it to every meeting, so in an effort to keep members better informed about what is happening in the Society, the secretary will provide a synopsis of the last general meeting and board meeting.

NOVEMBER GENERAL MEETING
(Held November 14, 2005) Jim Hamilton of Petite Plaisance Orchids offered a wonderful slide show of his favorite orchids. Michael Corn gave a very informative and useful beginner’s talk on potting for orchids for the Northwest. What to remember? Air circulation is as important as water circulation. Part of the goal of your potting mix is to allow air flow around the roots. David Edgley also talked briefly about the International Phalaenopsis Alliance (www.phal.org). He is looking to form a local Phal. appreciation group. His contact information is on the new roster addendum.

NOVEMBER BOARD MEETING
(Held November 8, 2005) Chris Peterson will coordinate a group purchase of books from Timber Press in February or March. This will give members a discount of up to 40% off catalog prices. The Audti Committee certififed the Society’s 2004-05 finances. The board decided not to pursue an opportunity to host an AOS meeting in 2007. George Krasle is research some possible lighting and other improvements in the meeting room for the board.

Brian Anderson
Secretary

Make a resolution to get involved!

The NWOS desperately needs a new newsletter editor—the old one is all worn out!

No real experience is necessary. Basic writing/editing skills, desktop publishing or web experience will be helpful but are not required. This position requires a commitment of 8-10 hours per month.

Volunteers will need to have their own computer and an e-mail account that they check regularly. The editor is also responsible for printing and distributing the newsletter. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Brian Anderson at nwos_news@nwos.org.
